In response to a question raised by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in the House today, the Minister said the government had already gone into purchasing Arabian light fuel.
“ We can no longer purchase fuel from Iran because of the crisis,” he said.
The Minister also assured that fuel prices would be reduced the moment the global prices go down as it had been done in previous occasions.
He defended the increase of fuel prices stating that the loss incurred for a litre of furnace oil was Rs.48, while the loss incurred for a litre of kerosene was Rs.30 and Rs.26 for a litre of diesel before the recent price increase.
Responding to the statement made by the opposition leader that the CPC was a profit making venture during the UNP regime, Mr. Premajayantha questioned as to why the regime under Mr. Wickremesinghe sold one third of the CPC to an Indian company if it was running smoothly.
