Drug shortages at the Anuradhapura Teaching hospital

It has been revealed that the reason behind the occasional occurrences of drug shortages at the Anuradhapura Teaching hospital is the failure to come up with proper estimates.

The Ministry of Health states that ideally, a monthly review should be conducted on the available quantities of drugs at the hospital, with pharmacists meeting with the Director of the Hospital to conduct these reviews.

However, investigations have revealed that such monthly reviews have not be carried out.

Monthly reviews have now been made compulsory to avert future drug shortages and three officers of the Medical Supply Unit have been assigned to participate at the reviews.

The Ministry of Health has declared that the officers will have to bear the responsibility for all future drug shortages.
