Release 1450 prisoners

The government has taken steps to release 1450 prisoners in view of the 64th Independence anniversary.

Commissioner General of Prisons, P.W. Kodippili said that the group consists of inmates convicted of minor crimes and inmates who are in custody due to their inability to pay fines.

 

The largest group of prisoners to be released, which is 177, are from the Bogambara Prison.

In addition 145 inmates of the Welikada Prison and 115 prisoners from the Mahara Prison have been  released.

He further stated that those convicted under 27 categories of crimes including violating the Customs Ordinance and murder have not qualified for release.

He also noted that in view of Independence Day steps had been taken to commute the sentences of

the majority of prisoners by one week.
